The Apple Fell Right On Me....by Juli

More and more I feel like I am turning into my parents circa 1970. They jumped off the band wagon and went off the grid, living in a tent here in Northern California. They lived off the land, they lived simply. With the price of everything {food & gas} going sky high I am ready to pull out the bike, pick up my shovel and stick it to the man! {whoever he is} Are you with me?!? I would love to have chickens who give me eggs, a butcher down the road for my fresh meat and the smell of baking bread in my kitchen. What else could you ask for? I have turned into a hippie. {don' worry I will still shave my armpits and comb my hair} The very essence of what my parents were and still are has been passed down, and there is no denying it. I mean come on Jessica is going plastic and paper towel free, next she will be turning her swimming pool into a giant bathtub and harvesting mushrooms for her homemade Kambucha {he..he..he..}

I know what you mean. I told Zack the other day, we've got our meat guy, now our vegetable and egg people, all I need is a dairy person and I will never have to go to the store again. Remember when mom used to make her own yogurt? I am almost there...

That's awesome! They lived in a tent! That's my kind of people! but yes, agreed, I still need a brush and razor...and a toilet, I can't dig holes like my dad did in vietnam!

So cool! Wes and I have talked about getting "off the grid" and sticking it to "the man" for a long time... I want some land with a farm, garden, green house and be totally self sufficient. I would love to do canning, jarring and pickling also. We have even talked about solar panels and windmills for electricity. As of now it is a regular discussion and a dream that we hope to be a reality some day. I WILL still shave and bath regularly FYI :). Keeping the hippy dream alive, Michelle

Jess- They still have the milkman here in Colorado. We have an ice chest on our porch and they have tons of stuff you get. We get our milk, which is from a local dairy and of course hormone free. Plus you can get eggs, cookie dough (YUM) all dairy products, juices, coffee even french vanilla coffee creamer. He comes once a week and you just check an order sheet of what you want or do nothing and they deliever your standard order and prices are no higher then Safeway (maybe a bit higher then Walmart) but so worth it!

I guess we still are off the grid, or off our rocker. Just wanted you to know that we actually did make kombucha tea and it was gross and slimy and grew so quickly that it was taking over the studio. I cannot believe that was us. Yikes, how time flies. I love you girls. I read your blog every day. Oh, yes, we love the boys too but they are on facebook and I don't really want to go there. Mom

Oh Mom, you make me laugh! Was the kombucha tea that mushroom thing? Didn't Papa Kiyo give it to you, or was that some other odd thing you grew?
The pic of you and Dad is one of my fav's :-)

One of Papa Kiyo's best gifts. It had to live in the studio because it smelled really fermented. I can't say there was any medicinal properties in it that made up for the smell.

I totally remember the kombucha growing in the yellow pyrex bowl and the stench that emanated from it. Pretty gross. Papa Kiyo sure had the nack for gifts huh?!?

The best gift they ever gave was the Nintendo system. Remember that (one time), they came driving up with a truck filled with presents? I got that big blue stuffed parrot!!

I got a stuffed elephant. I also remember a time when they came up and they brought a ton of junk that was on its way to the dump. It had a horrible old people smell too.
