My pantry is far from being completely free of processed foods, but I'm making a pretty valiant effort. It does mean that everyone wishes we had more snacks in the house, but it also means we're eating healthier stuff. One of the kids favorite snack is: homemade croutons.
I save up the ends of our loaves of bread and cube them, toss them in a heavy drizzle of olive oil, season them with garlic salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and Italian seasoning, get them browned up and crispy in a saucepan on medium/high heat, then smother with parmesan or asiago cheese and pop in the oven for an hour or so in a 300° oven.
It's the brown crusty cheese that makes these croutons addicting!
