A little DIY Justine

As usual I've been m.i.a. but here to quickly fill you in on all the
fun I've been having. We've been busy finishing up our guest studio and here's the nearly completed kitchenette...Ahh, you wonder, how'd you do that without buying anything new?

Okay, to be truthful, I did buy some things new. But here's the rundown on what we bought secondhand or "diy":

  • Whirlpool Refrigerator - $300 craigslist (I know its a little overkill for a kitchenette, but I'd spend the same amount on a new dinky one at Home Depot and this one is pretty nice)
  • Countertop - DIY concrete, cheap (not quite finished in this pic)
  • Tile Backsplash - While shopping for tile at Home Depot I remembered a couple of boxes of tile leftover from a past job that's been just sitting in our garage - FREE! Then I got to pay someone to install it! Yay for me!
  • Porcelain Kohler sink - $10 craigslist (alot of elbow grease, big payoff!)

  • Cabinets - $150 Industrial Reuseable Materials in Windsor - recycled from a big house they gutted in San Francisco (a little spackle, sanding and touch-up paint and they are as good as new...hey maybe I should do that on my cabinets!)

So, I did buy a new faucet and pulls and handles for the cabinets. The pulls were a really funky size and I had to order ones that don't even really fit either (don't look too closely). I'm sure I could have found a faucet on Craigslist but at that point we were just wanting to be DONE so calling and driving around was not an option. Flooring was cheapo Home Depot 1.00 sq ft. so don't look to close at that either.

All in all, I think we did pretty good for trying to go secondhand/cheap. What do you think?
