I take after my mother who only likes matte cover books with a pretty picture, so four science fiction books in a row was out of my comfort zone - don't get me wrong I enjoyed them thoroughly but when I told Zack that our ansible net seemed to be strong...I knew it was time to take a science fiction break.
It's been a long time since I've read a book that I couldn't put down and couldn't wait to finish so I could read it all over again. Here's my top five list:
Memoirs of a Geisha. I got so wrapped up in this book, and I'm so glad I read it thinking it was a true story the first go around. I wish I hadn't seen the movie though.
A Fine Balance. I get so involved with the characters every time I read it. I don't want to say too much about it, but if you're needing fluffy and happy...this isn't it.
East of Eden. It took me a few tries to get going, but once I did I couldn't put it down. Once I read this book I got on a classic kick and had a great time reading The Good Earth, Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the Flies, etc.
I Know This Much Is True. It's pretty intense and has some swearing, so close your eyes during those parts.
The Time Travelers Wife. Oh man, I wish I hadn't watched the movie either. It's just so much better to have your imagination make the pictures than Hollywood.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. You HAVE to read that one Jess!!! One of my favorites...now all you have to do is get Juli to hurry up and read (ha ha) Justine's copy so you can borrow it!

Jess, I've only read one of your favorite books. Shame on me. Can't bring myself to read East of Eden as I couldnt stand steinbeck in school. You like your novels darker than I do. I love "Hotel on the Corner..." and "Guernsey" too, but they are
probably too sweet for you. I recently read 5 quarters of the Orange and Snowflower and the Secret Fan. You might try those. I liked them a lot and not sweet. ;-)
What about the #1 ladies detective books or Jason Bourne books?

Thanks for all the recommendations! Some of them do sound too nice for me...Justine know I like em dark. I don't feel satisfied unless I've felt tortured and weepy. I will definitely look into all suggestions though!!! Thx :-)
