Threading....by Jessica

I usually get my eyebrows waxed. Well, I shouldn't say "usually" because that makes it sound like it happens often. I should say that when I need someone else to tend to my brows, when the tweezers just won't cut it anymore, I get them waxed.

But, my friend (Hi M) kept talking about how she gets her eyebrows threaded, so I thought I'd give that a shot. I went to the mall kiosk (Brow Art) and was very happy with the threading. You're just going to have to ignore the fact that you're in the mall getting hair taken off your face in the view of all who are walking by. I'm okay with that type of thing (remember, I'm the one who got reflexology done at the mall) but it is something to take into consideration.

And I don't know if it's just me, or if it's an American thing, but when I get a service done I want to stand for a minute and check out the area, look at the price list and just mull for a second. And I don't know if it's a cultural thing, or a mall thing or what..but I think they've been trained to just get the person in the chair...even if they're asking questions or moving kind of slow and look like they want to mull...just GET THEM IN THE CHAIR. And the chair...just be prepared because it's set so you're sitting waaay reclined. So once you're in the chair and the blood is rushing to your head, you aren't asking any more questions.

Once you're done with the threading, be prepared to barter. They will try to sell you a membership and she spits out figures on a calculator super quick...and the blood is still rushing back down out of your head so you might not be thinking properly. I'm not sure if I got a good deal or not but I paid $65 for 6 brow and lip threads. Please let me know how I did on my bartering skills and if anyone else is getting a better deal than this elsewhere.

And one last thing. When they thread - the thread is in their mouth. But at no time does the thread that was in their mouth touch your face. I googled it while searching for "How to learn how to thread your own eyebrows". I mean, I have thread in the house and I could probably learn how...

I also was made aware of this other option to get your eyebrows trimmed up and went ahead with the "plan". Mine I think was unlimited for 2 months and around the same price. But who was I kidding, I can't get there for that often enough to make that worth the price. But I did get there probably about 4 times and by the last time I swore I never wanted to do it again, no matter what chemicals might be in the wax (which I stretch out to many many weeks in between). It seemed to get more and more painful each time and by the end it was a 10 minute or so painful crying session. the tears just came, no stopping them.

BUT I think that's a very reasonable deal you bartered out there!

What? It gets more painful? uh-oh, that's why she tries to get you to buy a package!!!!

I've been having my brows threaded for about 15 years now and I like it much better than waxing, I don't layers of skin peeled away along with the hair. I've had my lip done as well, even my forehead at one time too. For me it never got more painful with time, so don't run away quite yet Jess. I think the $65 is a good deal -she told me that I did not have a time limit to use it up so that sounded good to me as well since I wouldn't be going once a month as I'd prefer. Bargaining is definitely part of the culture so go you for immersing yourself in it! Sorry you got hurt Rachel :(

You have thread in your house now?! Wow you are movin on up in the world :) we keep tweezers and a mirror in our office desk and in the early afternoon the light is just perfect to pluck away! When a customer comes walking in its kinda embarassing, but oh well! I look forward to seeing you perfectly manicured brows :)

Juli & Jess -you two are so funny! A friend came over last night with perfectly shaped brows, she said she's been getting it done at the Benefit counter??? I'd like to look into that too, hm.

There was groupon for 3 months unlimited eyebrow threading for $29is that a better deal? not sure.. because its for the downtown mall in San Francisco so I guess if your there alot its a super good deal but probably not worth the money to travel down there and get it done, not to mention paying for parking and all that. But hey I love the city so any chance to get there is cool with me.

I used to have my brows threaded by my neighbor in Yuba City, she would stare at my eyebrowns until I would finally say.."go ahead, fix them" She would practically pay me to have them done so she didn't have to fixate on my bushy brows..but anyhow, I always thought it was super painful, but well worth it! No reddness from waxing. and as far as doing your own..I once had a friend wax herself, and lets say it didn't go well!
