No habla Espanol....by Jessica

Everywhere I go, people speak Spanish to me.

To make people aware that I don't speak fluently in Spanish, I usually respond in English.....

Them: "Hola, como estas?"
Me: "Hello.  Good, thanks.  How are you?"

This isn't because I don't know how to respond back but it's because if I answer back in Spanish then they proceed to have a longer more involved conversation which has to end with me saying "no habla Espanol" or some other botched up version of I speak very little Spanish.

Which is then followed by them looking at me with a "what kinda Latina girl are you?" which I then have to explain in my poorly spoken Spanish about my "japones" and "ingles" heritage which makes me look Spanish, but I'm not and I've explained that little tidbit about 6 million times in my life and I'm kinda sick of it.

I'm thinking about slapping a sticker on my shirt that says "I wish I could speak Spanish but I don't.  I'm half Japanese".  But of course, in Spanish.  Which would result in people thinking I spoke Spanish...so I'd be back to square one.

Maybe I should just learn Spanish?

Aw that's hilarious; i'm going to get you that sticker! Trin get's that response too. At Mexican restaurants, he's just started ordering in Spanish.

But then don't they try and ask him all sorts of questions in Spanish??? I know I won't understand "do you want an appetizer?" in Espanol.

Rachel - I kind of like dilemena - sounds like an enema gone awry.

A great blog. Working at a bank I tend to get both. Either folks thinking I speak Spanish.. Cant tell u how many times I have been asked if I'm from Cuba or Brazil.
Or I get folks that look at me weird when I speak the little spanish that I do know. It's a never ending paradox I tell you!
